Birmingham City - Transport Information

Birmingham Airport

Situated to the south-east of the city, in Solihull, Birmingham International is a major airport, serving the West Midlands region with frequent domestic and international charter and scheduled flights. There are weekly direct arrivals from such far-flung destinations as Delhi, Dubai, Islamabad, Luxor, New York and Toronto. The airport has its own train station, “Birmingham International,” linked to the Passenger Terminals by the free Air-Rail Link service, which runs every two minutes between 0515 and 0200. The station lies on the West Coast Mainline with fast and frequent connections to the rest of the UK.

Trains run from Birmingham International to Birmingham New Street Station every 5 – 15 minutes from around 06.15 (Sunday 08.45) to 23.15. The journey takes 10 – 20 minutes depending on whether you get an express or local (stopping) service. Regardless of which service you get, a single ticket costs around £2.00.

Bus service 900 runs every 20 – 30 minutes between Birmingham and the airport from around 06.10 (Saturday 06.30/Sunday 07.00) to midnight. The journey takes around 25 minutes and a single ticket costs £1.40. A taxi from the airport to central Birmingham will take around 20 minutes and will cost around £20. The National Exhibition Centre is adjacent to the airport.

General Transport

The predominant form of public transport within Birmingham is bus. Travel West Midlands operates a large network based on a range of services radiating out of Birmingham city centre. There is no central bus station for local services; buses depart instead from various locations in the city centre (principally Bull Street, Colmore Row, Corporation Street and Stephenson Street).

Bus stop maps are available from libraries, tourist information offices and the Travel West Midland shop at New Street Station. Single fares are currently £1.40 on TWM services, and transfers are not allowed. There are no return tickets, but you can buy an all-day pass for £3.00 or an evening pass (after 18.00) for £1.80. TWM buses do not give change, so make sure you have the right amount.
